The overall goal of my research is to study the expression of the human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 2B17 (UGT2B17) gene and investigate it as a possible new biomarker for human prostate cancer. This research is part of the Cancer Research Partnership between the JLC-Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute and the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. Towards this goal, we will examine the role growth factors and hormones have on the transcriptional activity of the UGT2B17 gene promoter region and identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). In my lab, we will study the transcriptional activity of the UGT2B17 gene promoter by observing changes in DNA methylation and transient reporter gene activity in human cancer cell line systems.
