Harvey L. McMurray Sr., Ph.D.Chair
Dr. Harvey L. McMurray, Sr. is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1980 from the University of Maryland, a Masters Degree in Urban Studies at Howard University and his doctorate degree in Criminal Justice at Rutgers University. Dr. McMurray has been at NCCU since August, 1987. A former Washington, D.C. police officer, his research areas include research methods, community policing, comparative/international criminal justice, juvenile justice and community change. Dr. McMurray is a 1998-1999 Senior Fulbright Scholar assigned to the Sociology Department at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. His tenure at Makerere included several speaking engagements throughout Uganda and South Africa. He also consults with the United Nations African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and Treatment of Offenders (UNAFRI). Dr. McMurray attended the Ordinary Meeting of UNAFRI's Governing Board in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, March 2003, to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding between UNAFRI and North Carolina Central University. Dr. McMurray has several publications and is known for his grantsmanship. He currently serves as Director, University Undergraduate Research Program and helped established the Juvenile Justice Institute. More recently, under Dr. McMurray's leadership the Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development was established as a unit with the Department. In addition, Dr. McMurray is the Executive Director, Center for Domestic and International Criminal Justice Research & Policy. He has received several grants over the past years. Dr. McMurray is actively involved in the community and currently serves as past Chair, Durham Human Relations Commission; Chair, Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Durham; and Chair, International Affairs Committee, National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, among others. He currently serves NCCU in a variety of capacities to include: NCCU Representative, University of North Carolina Undergraduate Research Consortium (Office of the President); NCCU Representative, North Carolina Consortium on Undergraduate Research; Chair, Undergraduate Research Day and is responsible for the publication of the University Undergraduate Research Journal. Finally, Dr. McMurray received the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching in May 2004; this is the highest award for teaching in the University of North Carolina system.
