  • A Homeland Security Focus Growth Award ($195,000) was received to develop concentrations in Homeland Security and Forensic Applications in Criminal Justice. The Criminal Justice Department is collaborating with other academic units such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and computer sciences, geography and earth sciences, environmental sciences and public administration to provide courses in this special interest area of Homeland Security. "Prominent features of the homeland security and forensic concentrations will be their interdisciplinary design and experiential emphasis," said Dr. Harvey McMurray, chair of NCCU's Department of Criminal Justice. The Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development will provide homeland security and criminal justice students courses that will help them develop broad corporate, national and international security viewpoints, and understand their role as homeland security professionals in the homeland security infrastructure.
  • The first cohort (4 troopers) recently graduated from a degree program in collaboration with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Troopers took courses on-line, through inter-active video conferencing and on-line, and also in-class.
  • The Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society was established recently at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Seventeen NCCU graduate and undergraduate students along with five faculty members were inducted. The Honor Society is open to candidates who rank in the top 25% of their class. The candidates were selected because of their exemplary character, leadership, high moral character and high academic standards. The officers of the Eta Lambda Chapter are: LaShonda Bacote, president, Tiffany Kimbrough, vice president, Journe' L. Hammonds, secretary, and Kevin V. Clark, treasurer. Student inductees were: Sharline Alston, Edrina Bailey, Sharee Covington, Quanda Edwards, Lawrence McPhail, LaPortia O'Neal, Tasheka Pearson, Angela Reddick, Nichole Smashum, Quincey Tait, Tameka Vaught, Rita-Nadia Whithow and Reginald Wilson. Faculty inductees are: Mr. Joseph Sroka, Mr. Wendell Andrews, Dr. George Wilson, Dr. Harvey McMurray and Attorney William Nicholson.
  • NCCU Student Chapter of the National Association of Blacks (NABCJ) participated in several projects ,i.e. homeless shelter, the local jail, Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts to name a few.
  • Criminal Justice students logged over 6,480 hours in community service through the Office of Academic Learning and Community Service.
