We are delighted that you are interested in the Department of Nursing at North Carolina Central University. The nursing program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (www.nlnac.org) and approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

The nursing curriculum is divided into lower and upper divisions. Each is two years in length. The traditional nursing curriculum is offered for qualified high school graduates, transfer and second degree students, and licensed practical nurses. The mobility curriculum is for registered nurses licensed to practice nursing in North Carolina. The lower division courses provide knowledge in natural and social sciences with a liberal arts focus. The upper division courses are in the nursing major. All students must successfully complete the pre-nursing courses prior to admission to the nursing program. Traditional students spend two years in each division. Qualified RN-BSN students receive advance credit for previous education and complete the upper division courses.

Classes are held on campus and off-campus through extension and distance learning initiatives. RN students click here for more information.

Some of the local health care agencies that provide clinical experiences include: The Veterans Administration Medical Center, Duke University Medical Center, Durham Regional Hospital and Home Health Agency, Wake Medical Center, Maria Parham Hospital, Lincoln Community Health Center, Health Departments of Durham, Franklin, Granville-Vance District and Person Counties, and the Shiloh All People's Clinic, a nurse managed clinic located in Morrisville, N.C.

Financial Aid awards are available in the form of loans, grants and scholarships from the University, the Department of Nursing and outside resources. Most scholarships and loans have specific criteria for eligibility which may include GPA, meritorious activities, financial need, geographic residency, or interest in a nursing specialty. A visit with a financial aid counselor may prove worthwhile to help sort out the many types and requirements for financial assistance.

Two resources for additional financial aid information are The North Carolina Foundation for Nursing, (800-729-1975) and the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority which includes the Nurse Scholars Program and the Nurse Education Scholarship and Loan Program (919-549-8614). The Department of Nursing at NCCU has some funds available to assist students.
