The Department of Physical Education and Recreation offers courses leading to both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physical Education and Recreation.

The Department of Physical Education and Recreation offers a scientifically based program for students who want to work with people, enjoy activity and gain satisfaction in enhancing the quality of life of others. The curricular emphasis is on the professional preparation of students for careers in teaching, athletic training, recreation management, therapeutic recreation, fitness, health and sport club management. High schools and colleges, professional and recreational sports agencies and arenas, hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, city parks and recreation, state and national parks, commercial agencies, health clubs and fitness centers are among the many organizations which require highly trained personnel. Career opportunities are growing rapidly for people who are professionally prepared in areas of recreation, sports, physical education and exercise.


DEGREE INFORMATION
Students majoring in Physical Education and Recreation at North Carolina Central University may earn a Bachelor's Degree of Science (B.S.) in either Athletic Training, Physical Education, or in Parks and Recreation Management. There are three options under Physical Education; Athletic Training, Exercise Sport Science, Fitness & Wellness Management, and Physical Education Teaching. There are three options in Parks and Recreation Management; Recreation Administration, Recreational Sport Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. 

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Science program requires 124-128 credit hours with 30-60 in the major. All options consist of Critical Foundations in Arts and Sciences (CFAS) courses, basic science courses, professional courses and/or teacher education courses. 
Students may also choose to Minor in Physical Education  or Recreation. A Recreation Certificate is also available, with all courses available on-line via the WWW.


NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY ACCREDITATION
North Carolina Central University, a state-supported liberal arts institution, is located in Durham, North Carolina. NCCU is one of sixteen constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina. NCCU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Bachelors' and Masters' degrees. The Department of Physical Education and Recreation is accredited by National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and American Alliance on Leisure and Recreation (AALR), the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCCU is one of only two schools in North Carolina with this distinction.
