FOUR EAGLES HIT DOUBLE-FIGURE KILLS AS NCCU SWEEPS PROVIDENCE

Shari Matthews     DURHAM, NC - Four Eagles amassed double figures in kills to spark North Carolina Central University to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-20, 30-19) sweep of Providence College on day one of the NCCU Women's Volleyball Tournament in Durham, N.C. on Friday (Sept. 28).
     NCCU (12-9) was topped by senior Shari Matthews, the 2006 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, with 13 kills, 11 digs, a season-high eight service aces and six assists. Fellow senior Anielle DaSilva recorded a match-high 14 kills, while senior Kai Wright added 13 kills and nine digs, and sophomore Naima Stennett had 10 kills and four service aces. 
     NCCU junior setter Kristan Fields distributed a career-high 46 assists, to go along with seven digs and three kills. All seven Eagles that played recorded at least one kill, including sophomore libero Rachel Lloyd, who collected a team-best 15 digs.
     Providence (10-7) was led by Elizabeth Flynn with five kills and three blocks. Kasey Adinolfi tallied a match-high 18 digs, and Sara Sheehan added 15 assists, three digs, two blocks and two service aces for the Friars.
     In the first match of the day, North Carolina A&T defeated Savannah State, 3-0 (30-21, 30-14, 30-19). 
     Middle hitter Avignon Williams amassed a match-high 14 kills and three blocks to pace A&T, while Brenden Chatman collected 36 assists, five kills and five digs for the Aggies.
     Savannah State was led by Donna Jenkins with nine kills and two blocks.
     Saturday's schedule begins with North Carolina A&T against Providence at 10 a.m., followed by NCCU versus Savannah State at 1 p.m., and Providence against Savannah State at 4 p.m. The feature match-up, which will be played at McLendon-McDougald Gym, has NCCU hosting rival North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m.
