NCCU VOLLEYBALL BLANKS A&T, WINS TOURNAMENT TITLE

Shari MatthewsDURHAM, NC - The North Carolina Central University volleyball team got the job done, as senior Shari Matthews tallied a match-high 23 kills and fellow senior Anielle DaSilva notched nine to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-18) victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday evening. The Eagles claimed the NCCU Tournament trophy as the lone undefeated team (3-0) during the weekend play.

With the win, NCCU improves to 14-9 overall, while the Lady Aggies drop to 2-18.

The Eagles held a 5-0 lead in the opening game before A&T went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage. The Eagles fought back and closed out the game by scoring the final six points for the 30-24 victory.

A&T stayed close in the second game, not falling behind by more than three points after being down 13-16.  The Eagles, however, went on an 8-1 run (24-14) before closing out game two with a 30-21 victory. 

NCCU started off hot in the third game, scoring the first five points. The Lady Aggies triggered a 6-3 run, edging the hosts to its limits. NCCU would steadily extend its cushion to as much as 10 points (27-17) en route to a 30-18 victory. The Eagles only committed 14 total errors.

Krystal Cooper led North Carolina A&T with a team-high 13 kills and Brenden Chatman had 23 assists for the game.
