ST. AUGUSTINE’S CONTINUES DOMINANCE

AT CIAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHARLOTTE – Saint Augustine’s College continued its track & field dominance by winning both men’s and women’s team titles at the 2004 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC.
St. Augustine’s women amassed 226 points to cruise to their eighth straight conference crown. Host Johnson C. Smith, who placed eighth a year ago and whose best team result since 1990 was fifth, finished second with 90 points. Livingstone College and Virginia State University tied for third with 85 points.
The men’s top three positions look the same as last year, with St. Augustine’s men tallying 206.5 points to claim their seventh consecutive team title. Livingstone captured second place with 125 points, while Virginia State scored 98 points for third place.
Doris Thompson scored 30 points for the victorious Lady Falcons with wins in the shot put, discus throw and javelin throw, earning the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete award. St. Augustine’s teammates Melissa Murillo and Maria Medina were selected co-Most Outstanding Female Track Athletes. Murillo won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and ran a leg of the winning 4x100m relay squad. Medina repeated in both the 800m and 1500m runs and was a member of the repeat 4x400m relay team.
Larry Marshall topped the first place Falcons with a repeat performance in the 1500m run and a runaway victory in the 5000m run, taking home recognition as the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete.
Livingstone’s Patrick Wright repeated as the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete by capturing victories in the shot put and discus throw, and placing fifth in the javelin throw.
There were two three-peat performances Saturday, with St. Augustine’s Adrian Findley winning the men’s 400m hurdles for the third straight time and Livingstone’s Jordan Vaden capturing his third consecutive win in the men’s 200m dash.
