19th Annual Thad & Alice Eure Walk for Hope

Ote Id# 471
Contact: Dena Birks
Telephone: 919-781-9255
Date: 10/14/2007
Time: 9:00 AM -3:00 PM
Location: Angus Barn Restaurant/Umstead State Park

The Foundation of Hope For Research and Treatment of Mental Illness is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization established by Thad and Alice Eure in 1984. The purpose of the Foundation is to fund mental illness research, which develops more effective means of treatment. More than 96 research projects have been funded. To date, over $2.5 million has been given to fund local research projects. These funds have factored into an additional $100 million dollars from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The types of projects funded include schizophrenia, anorexia nervosa, depression, bipolar disorders, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Thad & Alice Eure Walk for Hope is the only annual community event in the country raising money for mental illness research. The Walk started in 1989 by employees of the Angus Barn, Fat Daddy’s, and 42nd Street Oyster Bar in memory of Thad Eure, Jr. The Walk for Hope started with about 200 participants raising about $30,000 and in 2006 had grown to over 1500 participants raising over $350,000.

First we WANT them to have a good time. This is the one time that those effected by mental illness and their friends and family members can come to together and feel welcome and free to talk about mental illness. We are trying the raise awareness of mental illness and the devastating effects it has in the lives of those who suffer. Next we need them to be on time and responsible enough to work alone or with a partner. Will most likely need students to help direct walkers in Umstead Park and after the walk at the Angus Barn. May be other holes that need filling on walk day so students need to be to be flexible also.
