Distinguishing North Carolina Central University from many other institutions of higher learning is the service requirement to be performed by all active undergraduates. This is due to the longstanding tradition of "Truth & Service" and long belief held by Dr. James E. Shepard, our founder, that service to community is a lifelong trait that is mutually beneficial and impactful. Since the fall semester of 1995, all new full-time and transfer students are required to complete 15 clock hours of community service per semester, unless otherwise stipulated by a scholarship. This requirement also includes students who have recieved an Associate's degree. For their service, students must register approved agencies and/or courses with our office prior to beginning their experience. This is to ensure a safe and appropriate experience with their service opportunity and to help us keep track of all the wonderful service performed by our students. Students may complete a minimum of 15 clock hours of service per semester by working with community/campus agencies; enrolling in courses with actual service learning components; conducting community-based research; and participating in university-community initiatives that promote service learning as approved by the Director of the Academic Community Service Learning Program.
