Dr. Kornegay was born in Halifax, Virginia.  Prior to joining the Law School family at North Carolina Central University, Dr. Kornegay was in private practice and director of an area mental health clinic. She graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She earned her master’s degree from North Carolina Central University in Counselor Education. She later earned her doctorate from North Carolina State University in Counselor Education with a minor in Psychology. Dr. Kornegay is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and a national certified counselor (NCC). Dr. Kornegay has more than 17 years of combined social work and counseling experience, including supervisory, training, and research practice. Dr. Kornegay has delivered mental health services to diverse populations in a variety of settings from school, private practice, nonprofit, nursing home and mental health to social services.

Dr. Kornegay has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. She is currently adjunct faculty at Mount Olive College and Capella University. Dr. Kornegay’s interests include racial identity development, multicultural and diversity issues, and racial disparity within counseling.  She has a special interest in program development and childhood disorders in mental health. Dr. Kornegay served as a “mobile” clinician with Wake County Child Mental Health and the Raleigh Police Department (district 23). She responded with police officers as a crisis counselor whenever children were witness to traumatic events. She has extensive experience in crisis intervention. As an Investigative Assessment Social Worker with Durham County Department of Social Services, she investigated allegations of abuse, neglect and dependency against children.

Dr. Kornegay enjoys reading, family, and watching old black-and-white movies/shows. Dr. Kornegay is married and has two children.
