Indexes are systematic listings that are used to trace and identify
material, hence they are excellent sources for locating current
information on specific topics . They usually analyze the material
within a single article, as opposed to a whole book, so the vocabulary
used is more specific to your field of research, and not as general
as the LC subject headings used in catalogs for book-length works.
An Index is often referred to as a Serial Bibliography.
The bibliographies listed above are cumulative, and only
represent what is available at the time of publication. Indexes
keep a learning community current on new ideas being generated
as they are published.
The Shepard Library Reference
Team has an excellent guide
for locating articles. Use this as a starting point for locating
articles in your area of research.
These print sources, located in the Serials
Department, have articles indexed by various keywords necessary
to retrieve originally published articles.

Many indexing/abstracting services are now electronic, and are
called databases. Oftentimes, the full text of the article can
also be retrieved at the point of initial access. Shepard
Library has a collection of databases which address the needs
of research and study in English. One of the best is the MLA
Bibliography, but there are others that you will find to be
helpful. Go to Electronic
Databases for English and conduct a search for the topic or
author you are researching. If you need help, please stop at the
Reference Desk (530-6473); someone will be glad to assist
you.
