Subject Guides : Public Speaking

This guide lists basic English language reference sources both print and electronic on Public Speaking available in North Carolina Central University libraries.

Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information upon it. --Samuel Johnson from Boswell, Life of Johnson, April 18, 1775.

Before you start your research, ask yourself:
  • What is my topic?
  • What is the purpose of this speech?
  • What do I already know?
  • What questions do I want to answer in my speech?

Write your answers down and then move on to the next step:

Search Strategy

  • Determine the type of information needed.
  • List the keywords/terms which describe your subject.
  • Select appropriate books/articles.
  • Evaluate the information.

Books

NCCU Catalog

Use the NCCU Catalog to locate books on your subject using a keyword search. You may also do a title or author search as well. Consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings books (located at the Reference Desk and by the Reserves Desk) to find exact terms to search for a Subject Search.

Examples: Results:
keyword search: speeches 464 records
subject search: Speeches, addresses, etc 32 titles
American Orations 1 title
Public Speaking 65 titles
Debates and Debating 34 titles

As you can see, you will probably retrieve more records if you do a keyword search, but more is not necessarily better. The nice thing about keyword searching is that you don't need to know the exact title or subject when looking for a book. The records found doing a subject search will most likely be a closer match to what you're looking for, but you need to know the correct wording for the subject heading.
